Suffolk Branch

Battlefield Tours

The branch organises battlefield tours each year for members, which include an outing in Spring time, and another in the Summer.

The Spring Walk is, as the name suggests, a walking tour across the battlefield and every year a different location is chosen. The group size is  around 15 people, and usually based on the Somme battlefield, typically for 3 days following a specific theme, eg VC’s, Casualty Clearing operations, etc.

The Summer Tour is a longer trip and, as with the Spring Walk, has a theme or follows a specific action or Division. This tends to be larger in size, with up to 32 people over 4 or 5 days. We have travelled and stayed in most of the destinations where major events took place. Sometimes we find a guide from amongst ourselves but also we do employ top class guides from the wider First World War historian fraternity.

Throughout the Centenary, the Suffolk Branch has also organised a series of tours in conjunction with The Friends of the Suffolk Regiment following the story of the Regiment in each particular year.

As these tours are run on a cost recovery basis with no profit element they are often much cheaper than commercial offerings. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere make them an ideal way for ‘first timers’ to see the battlefields and new members (and friends and family) are always welcome.

PROPOSED BRANCH TOUR: David Hedges and Keith Cooper

We are planning a trip led by Clive Harris from Battle Honours. It would be based on his six day trip but shortened to five days to keep the cost down. Dates are likely to be July 27th to 31st or August 2nd to 6th. Cost not yet known but we are hoping to have a large coach. So far we have 17 registered as interested. If we can get over 20 the price will be £825 (with a single supplement). At this stage we are seeking feed back from you of those interested.

Please advise me on david.j.hedges@btopenworld.com

Here are Clive’s words from his latest promotion email for the Battle Honours trip. Our trip would be an adaptation of this:

If you are looking to visit the Western Front in 2026 but are perhaps in need of seeing areas outside of those more frequently trodden paths, then why not join us on our trip to the Battlefields around the city of Reims in the Champagne region?

This 6 day August tour will involve walks through the Marfaux sector looking at the battle of Tardenois 1918 and include a visit to the Italian Cemetery at Chambrecy. Other visits will include the impressive Fort de la Pompelle and the enormous preserved trench system at Le Main de Massiges (Pic above).

This set of battlefield entrenchments and bunkers is unlike any others on the Western Front, it's truly memorable and realistic for the feel of the debris, dirt and destruction. Of course it would be rude not to visit at least one Champagne vineyard for a taste of the local bubbles.

Details of the Champagne trip are still being updated but drop us a line if interested.
