Western Front Association

Suffolk Branch

About Us

The Suffolk Branch is one of the most friendly, lively and active branches of the Western Front Association.

It was formed back in the mid 1990’s by the late Stuart Bufton and Fred and Angela Hodson. Early notable members included the late Bill Hinchcliffe, Dave Empson, Taff Gillingham, Derek Pheasant, the late Barrie Thorpe and Professor Peter Simkins, who then still lived in Suffolk.

Since then it has gone from strength to strength. With average monthly attendance figures in excess of 50 people, the branch is steadily growing. In addition to our monthly meetings, we hold several social events throughout the year. Day trips, quizzes and themed evenings, all help to support the branch and cement the special ‘family’ spirit that we have.

All our monthly talks are varied and exciting. We try each year to cater for our branch members requests and our excellent Speaker Secretary never fails to amaze us with a balanced mix of speakers.

We have had several speakers return to us over the years, but we have not as yet, heard the same talk twice! Many of the great and good of Great War world have come to us over the years: Professor Gary Sheffield, Richard van Emden, Lisa Sentance, Professor Brian Bond to name but a few, and we have also been the starting point for many new speakers who have since gone on to become great names in the Great War academic world.

If you have an interest in the history of the Great War, and indeed Military History, why not come along and meet us? We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting!
